Assistive & Rehabilitative Technology Symposium (ARTS)

“ Towards Inclusive Society in Asia: Policy or Technology?”

ARTS is part of the Global Entrepolis @ Singapore (GES) event.

GES is an international event run by the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). Aiming to be a global marketplace for the exchange of funds, enterprise, innovation and technology.

Global Entrepolis @ Singapore (GES) 2006 will see the gathering of over 40 major events: from strategic conference and industry seminars to venture capitalist summits and business workshops; from an emerging technology exposition to winning innovations and effective business matching platforms.

ARTS 2006 will focus on topics such as Rehabilitation Technology (RT) and AT, Practice and Policy, Technology Transfer, Wheeled Mobility and Seating, Assistive Robotics and Mechantronics, Cognitive Disabilities, Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Dysphasia, Sensory Loss, Environmental Control, and Computer Access.

It aims to promote research, development, education, advocacy and provision of technology, that will improve the potential of people with disabilities and the geriatric population through the use of technology; to support the professionals engaged in these activities; to promote Singapore as a Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology hub; to promote, support and create local rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology related industries, to regional and international audiences; and to create a platform to interact with international and local experts in best practices in AT-related research.

Working with invited policy makers, experts, practitioners, Rehab Engineers, Therapists - OT, PT, SLP, Suppliers/Manufacturers, Researchers, Educators, AT Specialists, Advocates, Voc Rehab Professionals/Counselors, Users (clients), A*STAR, and VWOs, the symposium hopes to develop principles of best practices in AT research; to identify future research trends in AT; and to form working committee for the organization of the inaugural international Conference on Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology (i-CREATe) 2007, in April.

Dr ANG Wei Tech is currently an Assistant Professor of the School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University . Dr. Ang is an active researcher in the field of rehabilitative and assistive technologies and is the Principal Investigator of several biomedical technology research projects funded by A*STAR, NMRC, MOE, and NTU.

Presentation: "Wheelchair Accessible Bus (WAB) - Singapore Experience"

Mr ANG will share the experience of deploying the first WAB fleet in Singapore including the operational challenges and benefits to Passengers-In-Wheelchair (PIW). He will also share how SBST works with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Volunteer Welfare Organizations (VWO) to launch the first WAB service successfully.

Mr. Patrick KER has been has been involved in the development and running of the occupational heath/erogonomics consultancy services in SGH since 1997. His clinical practice includes providing treatment for people with neurological and musculo-skeletal disorders. He is the immediate past president and current vice-president for the Singapore Association of Occupational Therapists.

Poon Joe Fai joined LTA in 1997 and has been involved in public transport policy formulation and transport planning before assuming current responsibilities in regulating the bus and taxi industries. He has been involved in several cross-agency workgroups on issues relating to transport for people with disabilities over the years.

Ms Sherena Loh strongly believes that people with disabilities should be empowered to live life to the fullest. She is actively involved in promoting accessibility and independent living; and initiated programmes for youth development and performing arts. Under her chairmanship of the Rehabilitation Service, she has recently started the Personal Care Service. The desire to help people has inspired Sherena to actively serve people with disabilities in the community for more than 17 years.
